By John Flowers
CRKT, which stands for Columbia River Knife and Tool, has been producing some very solid, very high quality, and very reasonably priced knifes for years now. The mini my tighe is no exception. This knife has the option of being equipped with the OutBurst technology (you want this), which is CRKT's patented assisted opening mechanism. You simply begin to open the knife using the thumb studs, and the spring takes over, and quickly snaps the blade out and locks it into place. The assisted opening is very similar to the action on a switchblade, but as the opening is initiated by pushing on the blade, and not a switch or button, it is legal to carry in almost all 50 states(could be all, but check your state to be sure). The blade is made from very good quality steel, and the black model (#1093K) has a titanium nitride corrosion resistant coating, that is both excellent at protecting the blade, but also looks damn fine. I have owned 4 different knives made by CRKT, 2 of the M16 model, this one (which is my favorite, by the way), and another whose model escapes me. they are all very sturdy, and have withstood a massive punishment of sawing and prying and cutting, and still hold a nice sharp edge. These knives are as good as it gets when it comes to an everyday carry and use. There are many other competing companies that have similar knives with similar assisted opening (smith and wesson, kershaw, SOG, just to name a few), but this knife is by far my favorite, and definitely the best value for the money. the Veff serrations are unique to CRKT, look very cool, and all my male friends comment on this. I would not hesitate to buy another, although as strong and durable as these knives are, i doubt i'll ever have to. I would definitely recommend this to a friend, and i have. oh, and check ebay for a cheaper price ;) i got mine for $45 dollars new shipped, and they usually go for about $90. just buy this knife. you'll be very pleased.

By Ziv
Rather disappointed. I have been carrying a Gerber for quite a while, but I wanted a bit more blade for tougher jobs. Well, the blade on the CRKT is excellent, but the assisted open feels like it is 'off' by a 32nd of an inch, it just feels like it doesn't want to open. I have used assisted open knives for years, none of them feel this clunky. The close is starting to work better, but I literally had to pry the release the first few times to allow it to close. Not even graphite lubricant would loosen it up. And the lack of a lock is not cool. Especially when the CRKT website has one of its 10 reviews mentioning that the owner lost a small chunk of his finger to it when it opened inadvertantly in his pocket. I have had mine for just a day and it is already scratched up, not impressive.
BUT, the blade is excellent and the knife has a good feel in my hand after I open it. I don't think I will ever really like this knife, even though I do like it when it is opened. I may end up returning this one.
On edit:
It gets worse. I just realized that the pocket clip on the CRKT is on the PIVOT side of the handle not on the BUTT side. So if I draw the CRKT I have to flip it 180 degrees to open it, because the clip is on the wrong end! On a Gerber, the clip is on butt, so you can draw it with your right hand, flick the lock with your thumb and smoothly open the knife in less than a second. People literally can not tell I have a Gerber in my hand until it springs open. The CRKT forces me to do a funky sort of 'half-butterfly' to open it. The obvious reason seems to be that since the CRKT doesn't have a lock, they would prefer that if the blade is going to open in your pocket, they would prefer to have the dull spine of the blade coming toward your fingers instead of the sharp edge of the blade.
This can't be right.
After a months use: It grows on me. I have used it so much that I have gotten used to the half twist that you have to do to open the blade. It is slower but not by much. And it has yet to open in my pocket, despite the lack of a lock. And I like the blade even more now. And the blades opening/closing action has steadily improved. It still scratched easily, but the blade and the handle are both very well designed. The lack of a lock is a bit of a downer but I like this knife a lot more today than I did last month.

By Bubba Zak
I've owned this knife for about a year now. First, it is a well made EDC knife. It feels as sturdy now as when it was brand new. When new, however, the opening mechanism feels a bit stiff. It breaks in quickly though, but it doesn't get loose. It still feels rigid and tight, and the blade must be relatively hard. I have used it regularly, and it is quite sharp after many months. The Veff serrations are really brilliant. They cut well without the typical raw ripping associated with your average serrations. The hard "plastic" handle cover (pock-like) design seems like it could get slippery although I've never had an issue with this. The contoured handle provides a solid grip. In addition, there are ridged notches near the index finger and thumb holds that provide extra stability. One thing I really like about the knife is the ability to remove the open-assist "spring" if you like a more traditional opening knife. If I had to find one thing I'm not 100% excited about, it's the release. It is seen in other knives. A lever at the inside of the handle must be slid over to unlock and fold the knife back down. But even this is not major, as I've found that I am used to it now. Overall, this is a well designed, well thought-out knife. I would definitely buy another if mine were lost. I hope this knife is indicative of CRKT products, since I'm considering purchasing the full size 1091 model of this knife.
