The Buck Vantage Avid is an attractive folding knife with a touch of style. The handle is not as pictured! The handle has a woodgrain looking finish which is very cool and unique. The color/look is charcoal burned embers with an eggshell finish (not semi-gloss). The blade is beatiful too! The photo herein doesn't do this knife justice. I did, however, find some flaws which I don't like!

Blade shape is beautiful and substantial, great blade markings and insignia; Paul Bos heat treat; love the flame marker!
Sandvick 13c26 blade steel will take a scalpel edge like no other..
Blade came very sharp, but, after a minute on the Lansky crock sticks (fine), this thing became one of the sharpest knives I own.. Super, super, pocket clip design and appearance; looks great (not cheese-ball, or GI-Joe). Not too tight!!

Feels and looks more expensive! I paid $40 shipped, and would pay more for a newer model (mine came with the much lamented off-center blade when closed).. So, I was shipped an older one.

That you can buy this one for $20 less than the S30V version (in my opinion Sandvick is nearly as good as S30V).
Neutral:
Not a slim folder, but still EDC worthy. I think this is more of a hunting folder than an EDC'er.. It still barely passes EDC muster though(wide-ish).
Dislike:
A-little on the heavy side - nothing too bad. No drilled liners.
Some may not like the width of the handle (about 7/16 wide)..
DON'T CARRY your keys, or change in your pocket with this knife.. The knife is wide, and the handle's edges will scrape up your paws..
Thumb hole is not really beveled and a bit sharp on your thumb.
Finger flipper is just a hair to small. I'll still take it.
Knife came out of box a bit stiff, and needs oiling and adjusting... (Tried to loosen pivot screw.. and the knife wouldn't allow me to adjust the blade tension.., this is an issue for those of you who want your knife to flick open easier than this one comes)..
The detent on this knife causes the blade to sit off-center when closed (but this really doesn't bother me), and many online reviewers send it back to BUCK.. Not me.. The detent is meant to stop the blade from closing on your fingers.. (not a horrible thing, but a picky thing for some).
Zero jimping (top or bottom).
While the handle is very, very attractive, it needs more sanding on the top and bottom (a few sharp edges from the contours).
Hates:
Handle is attractive and holding the knife is fine, but this handle sucks in terms of it's texture, width, and lack of grip. It scrapes your hands when you do any repeated functions, or if you play with the knife; also scrapes your knuckels when reaching into your pocket for keys/change.
Overall: 4 stars (barely)
This is a a very good knife for 38$, which happens to look as nice as any folder around; but is it really a worthy EDC folder?? I say, just barely. It looks like vintage knife, with an upgraded blade. And, might be best served as a folding hunter (with use of a glove for skinning etc.). You get great steel, and good utility out of this knife. So, for you guys who want a pocket folder to have a modern blade, with a bit of back-woods flare, this is a very affordable choice. I deducted 1 star for the above dislikes and I really am feeling generous there.. (which I hope BUCK will improve on the hits I gave this knife). Nonetheless, I really like my AVID for the cost(especialy with Sandvick steel); it was a good buy despite a few QC issues! As much as I like the appearance of the handle, it has some sucky qualities, so I really would have to suggest going with the G-10 version of this knife (which is more expensive and has S30V). If you collect, I can certainly suggest this one. I would recomend a Spyderco Tenacious plain edge over this knife for an EDC carrier, which is more comfortable in this price range, but I do like Sandvick steel much better than 8cr13mov.

First off - I have carried a knife on me every single day since I was about 10 years old, needless to say, I have bought, broken and replaced a good deal of them. One day about 8 months or so ago I came across the Buck Vantage Select (the lowest model of the Vantage series) at a local sporting goods store. Needing to replace my then ailing EDC knife, I bought the Vantage Select to try it out. I was so impressed with the performance and quality of the Select that I decided it was high time that I got myself one of the nicer modes. The Buck Vantage Avid is from here on out my EDC knife, hands down.
Enough advertising for Buck - what about the Vantage Avid? It seems that Buck got the idea regarding some of the quality control issues that people were reporting and having to send the knives in for warranty work to fix. Fit and finish are flawless on the Avid that I received. Blade sits very well centered when closed and was completely free of any manufacturing or machining defects. Came pretty darn sharp and after some TLC on a whetstone I was slicing through junk mail with the greatest of ease. Printed "13C26" (the steel rating) on one side of the blade with the BOS heat treatment logo right above it. The dymondwood grips on this knife are absolutely gorgeous and not nearly as slippery as others would make it seem... Initially right out of the box they did have a very silky texture to them that I suppose could be construed as "slippery", but if you don't have enough hand-eye coordination to open and hold onto a knife, should you be really be buying one in the first place? But I digress! --- The dymondwood on this knife is really nice looking aesthetically - woodgrain pattern with a black/gray/ivory-ish color scheme --- Charcoal says it well. There is a Buck anvil logo inlaid into the rear end of knife - nice touch compared to the all-synthetic Select scales. The pocket clip on the Vantage series is the best I have ever seen - and I mean that. Holds the knife in place in your pocket very well and is made to let the knife completely disappear when not in use - the lowest of the low riders! All the screws on here are a T6 torque star head - handy to have all 1 size. You can pick up a T6 mini screwdriver for like 5 bucks. After all is said and done, couldn't be happier with this blade. I work in warehouse all day long and manage the shipping and receiving - I use this knife all day long, every day. Holds an edge extremely well versus cardboard and packing tape - and cutting those things will really put your sharpening job to the test. All in all, well worth the money for this particular blade and you will not be disappointed with your purchase, should you choose to make it. In conjunction with Buck's forever warranty, there is no reason why you shouldn't heavily consider picking yourself up one of these. Come to think of it, writing this review is making me want to buy the Pro model................

Knife arrived reasonably sharp, no defects, and well constructed. Once it was sharpened on our diamond stones and stropped, it could shave hair off and still cut up thicker material without rapid edge loss (all knives dull with heavy use of course). The belt clip is very nice; other manufacturers should emulate that accommodating design. Overall it's very high value - one gets a lot for the money.
